Subsidies for Heating System Replacement and Energy Systems
Subsidies for Heating System Replacement and Energy Systems in Styria
Replacement of oil, gas and older heating systems, heat pumps, biomass, district heating and other energy solutions
In Styria and at federal level in Austria, there are various subsidy options for modernising heating systems. However, these subsidies do not always apply to the same starting situation. The replacement of a fossil heating system, such as oil or gas heating, may fall under different funding rules than the replacement of an already renewable but outdated heating system.
For this reason, heating system replacement should be treated as a separate category alongside subsidies for new construction, property purchase and renovation. Whether a subsidy is available depends in particular on which heating system is currently installed in the building, which new system is to be installed, where the property is located, and which subsidy programme is available at the relevant time.
Which situations may fall under this category?
This category may include, in particular, the replacement of oil, gas, coal or old electric heating systems, as well as the replacement of old biomass boilers or older heat pumps with more modern and efficient systems.
Possible solutions may include new biomass heating systems, heat pumps, connections to local or district heating networks and, in certain cases, supplementary energy systems such as solar thermal systems or other measures to improve energy efficiency.
Federal Kesseltausch / "Raus aus Öl und Gas" subsidy
One important part of the federal Sanierungsoffensive is the Kesseltausch, meaning the replacement of old fossil heating systems with climate-friendly heating systems. This subsidy may be particularly relevant if the property currently has an oil, gas, coal or other fossil heating system and the owner wishes to replace it with a renewable or climate-friendly heating system.
This category may therefore be especially relevant for people who want to switch from an old oil or gas heating system to, for example, a heat pump, biomass heating system or district heating connection.
Styrian provincial subsidy for replacing renewable heating systems
The Province of Styria offers its own subsidy programme for replacing already renewable but outdated heating systems. This programme is called Tausch erneuerbar betriebener Heizungssysteme.
This subsidy should not be confused with the classic "Raus aus Öl" programme. It mainly applies to the replacement of biomass boilers and heat pumps that are at least 15 years old with more efficient renewable heating systems, or to a connection to local or district heating.
For 2026, the Province of Styria has allocated a specific subsidy budget for this programme. The subsidy is available to private individuals for one- and two-family homes as well as terraced houses. It is granted as a one-off investment subsidy, with the amount depending on the technology used. The subsidy may cover up to 30% of the eligible investment costs.
According to the official information, no income assessment is required. A main residence at the location of the heating system replacement is also not required, and there is no mandatory energy consultation. The application process is handled online.
Sauber Heizen für Alle
Sauber Heizen für Alle follows a separate funding logic. This programme may be particularly relevant for lower-income households that wish to replace a fossil heating system with a climate-friendly heating system.
This programme should not be mixed up with the general Kesseltausch subsidy or with the Styrian subsidy for replacing renewable heating systems, as the target group and requirements may differ.
Which technologies may qualify?
Heating system replacement subsidies typically cover biomass heating systems, such as pellet heating systems, heat pumps and connections to local or district heating networks.
It is important to note that not every device or system is automatically eligible for funding. Before choosing a specific heating system, it should always be checked whether the selected device or planned system meets the applicable subsidy requirements and, where relevant, appears on the respective lists of eligible systems.
Additional energy-related options
In addition to the actual heating system replacement, solar thermal systems, district heating connections, energy advice or other energy-efficiency measures may also be relevant in certain cases. Photovoltaic systems and battery storage may also be relevant as part of a broader energy concept, but they do not always fall under the same funding logic as classic heating system replacement.
From an advisory perspective, it is therefore important to distinguish between the actual replacement of the heating system and other energy-related investments.
What should applicants pay particular attention to?
The most important initial question is always: which heating system is currently installed in the property?
If it is a fossil heating system, such as oil or gas heating, the first step should be to check whether a federal subsidy under the Kesseltausch or "Raus aus Öl und Gas" framework may be available.
If, on the other hand, the property already has a renewable but old heating system, such as a biomass boiler or heat pump that is at least 15 years old, the Styrian provincial subsidy Tausch erneuerbar betriebener Heizungssysteme may be relevant.
The timing of the application is also particularly important. In many subsidy programmes, implementation must not begin before the required registration, application or confirmation has taken place. Starting the work too early may lead to the loss of eligibility.
Who may particularly benefit from this category?
This subsidy category may be particularly interesting for people who are purchasing a property with an old heating system, modernising their existing home, switching from oil or gas heating to a renewable system, or replacing an old biomass or heat pump system with a more efficient model.
The subsidies may help reduce investment costs. At the same time, a modern heating system can contribute to lower energy consumption, improved living comfort and more predictable operating costs in the long term.
For our clients
When planning a property purchase, renovation or heating system replacement, it is worth reviewing not only bank financing options, but also the available federal, provincial and, where applicable, municipal subsidies. A well-prepared financing structure can help combine equity, bank financing and potential subsidies in a coordinated way.
The requirements vary depending on the subsidy programme. For this reason, it is always advisable to check the current eligibility, technical requirements, selected heating system and specific financing options in advance.
We can support you with the complete handling of the bank financing related to property purchase, renovation or heating system replacement, as well as with the necessary legal and organisational coordination. Further information is available by clicking the button below:
